Europe Swelters Under Historic Heat as Death Toll Climbs
An unusual heat wave in June is breaking down all previous records for temperature in Europe, where more than 327 people have died because of heat in Spain, 55 drowned in France, and the biggest public gatherings such as Paris Pride and Defqon.1 festival had been canceled. Germany set a record for its highest temperature ever at 41.3°C, and Belgium, the Netherlands, and the UK also set their record temperatures for June, which were 5–12°C higher than the usual temperature. French hospitals are saturated with patients because of excessive heat, while overheated river waters shut down one Swiss nuclear reactor, and the Netherlands are already on a code red alert. Europe is warming up twice faster than the rest of the planet, and the heat wave may cause the premature melting of glaciers in Switzerland by the early next week.
